How hormones affect your lips and skin throughout the month
May 2026

Most women know that hormones affect their mood. Fewer know just how dramatically those same hormones affect the skin and lips — week by week, phase by phase, throughout the entire cycle.
Understanding this is not just interesting. It is the foundation of truly intelligent beauty.
Week one — Menstrual — Days 1 to 5
Estrogen and progesterone are at rock bottom. Your skin barrier is at its most compromised and your lips are at their driest and most sensitive. Collagen production slows. Hyaluronic acid levels in the skin drop. Inflammation can increase, making existing sensitivities worse.
What your lips need: zero fragrance, pure moisture, barrier repair. Nothing stimulating, nothing complex.
Week two — Follicular — Days 6 to 13
Estrogen begins its steady rise. This is one of the most noticeable transitions in the cycle — energy returns, skin starts to clear, lips begin to feel more comfortable and supple. Collagen production picks up. Skin cell turnover accelerates, giving you a fresher, more luminous appearance.
What your lips need: light hydration, brightening ingredients, a gentle tint. Something that works with your rising energy rather than against it.
Week three — Ovulation — Days 14 to 16
Peak estrogen. Peak luteinizing hormone. Your skin is producing more collagen than at any other point in your cycle. Hyaluronic acid levels are at their highest. Blood flow to the skin increases. Your lips appear naturally fuller and more defined. This is the week your skin does the most work on its own.
What your lips need: amplification. A glossy, plumping formula with a beautiful scent that celebrates what your biology is already doing.
Week four — Luteal — Days 17 to 28
Progesterone rises and then falls. Oil production increases — leading to potential breakouts and congestion. Estrogen drops — leading to dryness and sensitivity returning. The skin during the luteal phase is caught between two hormonal forces, and it shows. Lips can feel simultaneously dry and reactive.
What your lips need: balance. Calming ingredients, lightweight moisture, no fragrance, a grounding formula that asks nothing demanding of compromised skin.
Why one lip oil cannot do all of this
A single formula cannot be fragrance-free and beautifully scented at the same time. It cannot be intensely nourishing for a compromised barrier and light enough for skin at its peak. It cannot plump aggressively and calm simultaneously.
This is why Saulué exists as four separate oils rather than one. Because your lips are not the same every week. And your products should not be either.
